? who would have thought? i did. we did, bob. we did. got it. >>> all right. so there were new jobs numbers yesterday as happens in the first friday in every month. the previous month's job numbers are reported by the bureau of labor statistics, and some interesting things happened. so the jobs report, it's not that good of a jobs report at all. 114,000 -- not at all. it was not some amazing jobs report. 114,000 new jobs. the big headline number was that unemployment, which is drawn off -- there's two different data sets that they are using, drawn off the household survey. that's the bureau of labor statistics goes out and does a survey of individuals and says, are you working? have you found work? were you not working before? they compute a percentage. the unemployment rate has gone down below 8% which is in some ways a manageable number because mitt romney has been saying on the stump that the president said it was going below 8% and it hasn't so he has to take that out of his stump. in response to this, conservatives, not just fringe figures in the communist red state starting sp

race was a choice between bill clinton and bob dole. 16 years ago, the incumbent president and his republican challenger met for their first debate. the showdown was in hartford, connecticut, and moderated by jim lehrer of pbs. it was also the year of a new block of voters, that was identified as jonathan alter explained to tom brokaw in the post-debate analysis. >> the swing voter this year goes by a new buzz word. they're called soccer moms. these are white women, living in the suburbs, some of them watch their kids play soccer. four years ago, george bush led bill clinton by ten percentage points, 15 in some polls, with this constituency. this year clinton is crushing dole in all the surveys of this group. it's a tremendous number of voters, white women living in the suburbs. they respond to a certain set of issues, gun control, education, medicare, because many of them are taking care of their elderly parents and they're very concerned about these so-called social issues. dole did not do enough to address these issues directly. clinton, by contrast, mentioned not once, but twic

, there were perennial discussions about campaign finance. bob dole was the republican leader. he was interested in making sure the republicans got a good deal or at least they did not get a bad deal. he was not opposed to campaign finance reform or legislation. in today's world where mitch mcconnell is the senate leader, he has spent years opposing legislation in this area, and trying to shut down regulation we have. that is largely because of senator mcconnell that we have an sec that is deadlocked to this degree and unable to take any action because it takes four votes. there's a two-thirds requirement for the sec to do anything, so we should not be surprised that they don't. having said that, and i think it really is a change, i still hold out hope that after the election and the new congress that they will at least take a look at the disclosure side. the report was crystal clear in citizens united. eight-one, saying disclosure of all of this spending, issue ads as well as election ads, wereaign ads, candidate adds unconstitutional. it is a necessary thing. citizen should know
